Top 10 goal scorers of all Time
10. James McGrory
Goal scored: 550
James
"Jimmy" McGrory is a Scottish striker who played from the
year 1918 to 1935. This player is a living legend of Glasgow
Celtic, where he spent fifteen years of his career with a
record of 395 goals in 378 appearances. James is also an
essential player who helped Celtic to win the Scottish
League three times and also became the five times winner of
Scottish Cup.
James
earned the nickname as the "mermaid" because of his great
heading and jumping ability, even though he is only 168 cm
tall. After retiring as a player, McGrory decided to pursue
a career as a coach for Kilmarnock and Celtic.
9. Eusebio
Goal scored: 552
It's too
early for Cristiano Ronaldo to call himself as the best
football player in Portugal of all time. He still has to
surpass Eusebio, an attacker who is feared in his time and
was dubbed as the "Dangerous Black
Panther".
Eusebio is
an African immigrant who gained Portuguese citizenship. His
speed and agility made him Eusebio to be a great
striker. Besides her success in taking Portugal to get the
third place in 1966 World Cup and became the top scorer in
the tournament, Eusebio was also able to help Benfica won
the Portuguese League eleven times and also one time won the
UEFA Champions Cup.
8. Ernst Willimowski
Goal scored: 554
Throughout
his career, Willimowski played for two national teams,
Poland and Germany in the year of 1934 to 1942. Together
with the Polish national team, Willimowski became the first
player who can score four goals in a World Cup match,
precisely in the match against Brazil in 1938. His
appearances for the German national team wasn't a
disappointment, where he can score 13 goals in eight
matches.
Because of
his prowess, Willimowski was even allowed to continue
playing football, even during the World War II. He played
from one barrack to another barracks, to entertain and
encourage the German army.
7. Uwe Seeler
Goal scored: 575
One more
German attacker who successfully registered himself as the
soccer top scorer of all time. Uwe Seeler is known as a
reliable striker for Germany national team, and he is a
legend for Hamburg SV football club. During his career in
that club in the period 1953-1972 Uwee Seeler successfully
scored 404 goals in 476 appearances.
Uwe Seeler
is known as a striker who often scored from overhead kick.
Although he was a very talented player, Uwe Seeler was only
able to win few trophies. He only won one German League Cup
and one German League, although during that period he was
three times elected as the best player in the country.
6. Ferenc Deac
Goal scored: 576
His name
might not familiar to you. This is because Ferenc Deak's
career occurred in times of the World War, when many
international tournaments cannot be held. Deak also only
played for Hungarian local clubs, such as Szentlorinci,
Ferencvaros, and Budapesti Dzosa. Besides the number of
goals that he scored, other information about this player is
very minimal, even the photo of this player cannot be found
on the internet.
Deac played
for Hungarian national team in the span of 1944 to 1949,
where he scored 29 goals in 20 appearances. It is
unfortunate that this player had no chance to show his
skills in the world level because of the unstable politics
and economy conditions of Hungary after World War II that
made Deac had to retire as an international footballer.
5. Gerd Muller
Goal scored: 735
Gerd Muller
is the best striker ever for German national team and Bayern
Munich. As a striker, his physical appearance was too not
convincing. Muller has a short stature, mediocre speed, and
not too strong build. The most dangerous thing from him is
his very great ability in finishing and positioning.
Gerd Muller
is an important part of the team who brought West Germany
won the 1974 World Cup and Euro 1972. He listed himself as
seven times top-scorer of the German League, three times as
Europe's top scorer, and one time top scorer of the World
Cup. With Bayern Munich, Muller won four times German
League, four German Cups and four League Cups.
4. Ferenc Puskas
Goal scored: 746
Puskas was
a part of Hungary's golden generation that brought this team
to win the 1952 Olympics. Puskas also almost won the World
Cup 1854 before dramatically defeated by West Germany in the
final match. Throughout his career, this player is not only
known as prolific striker, but also a great ball passer.
His talent
and achievement made Puskas to be recruited by Real Madrid.
Together with the Spanish giants, Puskas won five La Liga
titles and three Champions Cups. He also recorded a personal
achievement by becoming four times top scorer in the Spanish
League, and he was awarded with the title of European and
world's best player in 1953.
3. Pele
Goal
scored: 767
Pele is touted as
the best player in the history of football. If you count the number
of unofficial matches that he played, the total goals scored by Pele
should be more than 1,000. Pele is the only player on this list who
is able to win three World Cup titles. He spent most of his club
career with Santos before finally deciding to retire with New York
Cosmos.
Because of his
talent, Pele is considered a "national treasure" by the Brazilian
government, and not allowed to play outside the country. In this
condition, Santos was the one who gained the most benefit. With Pele
in their side, Santos won 11 Brazilian league title (eight of them
in a row). Considering his skill and accomplishments, I think Pele
really deserves to be called as "The King of Football".
2. Romario
Goal
scored: 772
Pele may be named
as the King of Football, but in terms of the number of goals, there
is still a Brazillian player who is superior to Pele. He is Romario,
a prodigy striker who led Brazil to win the World Cup in 1994 and
Copa America in 1989 and 1997. In contrast to Pele who scored almost
all of his goal in Brazil, most of the goals scored by Romario was
actually scored in European League, when he played with PSV,
Barcelona, and Valencia.
Romario's love
toward soccer was proven when he continued playing until the age of
43 years. In addition to his great ability in scoring goals, Romario
also received more than 40 individual awards, among them are three
times Dutch League top scorer, three times Brazilian League top
scorer, and named twice as the Brazilian national team top scorer of
a year.
1. Josef Bican
Goal
scored: 805
It was a surprising
fact for me to know that the title of soccer top scorer of all time
is actually held by Josef Bican, Austrian footballer whose name is
less famous than Pele, Romario, or Gerd Muller. Bican played in the
period 1928 to 1955. His best period was achieved in Slavia Prague
football club, where he was able to score 395 goals in 217
appearances.
His achievement was
not surprising because in addition to having great football skill,
at that time most of the physically fit football players were sent
to the battlefield as soldiers. This fact made Bican had no
opponent, and that was one of the reason of his amazing record.
During his career, he was able to score seven goals in one game for
three times. He also became 12 times league top scorer from his 27
years football career, and five consecutive year scored the most
goals in Europe. At the end of his career in 1955, he could still
maintain amazing record by scoring 22 goals in 29 matches at the age
of 42 years.
